AI Pricing Models Explained for Buyers

A neutral overview of common AI pricing patterns, including freemium access, subscriptions, credits, usage billing, and contact-sales plans.

AI pricing is rarely a single sticker price. Buyers get into trouble when they compare a free plan to a sales quote without mapping what they will actually consume.

Freemium is a trial surface. It is useful to test quality and workflow fit. It is not a cost model. Limits on seats, history, models, or commercial use often appear only after the team is already dependent.

Subscriptions charge per seat or per workspace. They are easy to forecast when usage is steady. They hide cost when "one seat" still burns expensive model calls, or when every contractor needs a license.

Credits and usage billing meter tokens, minutes, images, or runs. They track reality more closely, and they spike. Ask for the unit, the included bundle, overage rates, and what a busy month looks like in your workflow, not the vendor's average customer.

Contact-sales plans package support, security, SSO, and volume discounts. Budget extra time for procurement. Get the range in writing, including what happens at the next usage tier and at renewal.

Compare total cost for 90 days, not day one. Include onboarding, required add-ons, and the people who will review output. A cheaper tool that needs heavy human cleanup is not cheaper.

Before you sign, confirm export, downgrade, and cancellation. Pricing that only works if you stay forever is a lock-in decision, not a software decision.
